The Messier's description:

Amas d'un grand nombre de petites étoiles, près de l'étoile K d'Antinoüs, que l'on ne voit qu'avec de bons instruments; avec une lunette ordinaire de trois pieds elle ressemble à une Comète: dans cet amas il y a une étoile de 8.e grandeur. M. Kirch l'observa en 1681. Transact. Philos. n° 347, page 390. Il est rapporté sur le grand Atlas anglois. 

Cluster of a great number of small stars, near the star K of Antinous which can be seen only in a good telescope. In a 3-foot [FL] instrument it looks like a comet. The cluster is mingled with a faint light. 8th mag. star in cluster. Seen by Kirch in 1681. Reported on the English Great Atlas. 

Ammasso costituito da un gran numero di stelle vicino alla stella K di Antinoo [Oggi Scudo, NdT], lo si vede solo con un buon strumento: con un ordinario telescopio da 3 piedi di focale somiglia ad una cometa. Nell'ammasso c'é una stella di 8a magnitudine. M. Kirch l'ha osservato nel 1681...E' registrato sul grande Atlante inglese.
