The Messier's description:

Amas d'étoiles près des étoiles n & o d'Antinöus, entre lesquelles il y en a une qui a plus de lumière: avec une lunette de trois pieds on ne peut pas les distinguer, il faut y employer un bon instrument. Cet amas ne contient aucune nébulosité. 

A cluster of stars near the stars n and o in Antinous [now a and d Scuti] between which there is one which is brighter; with a three-foot telescope they cannot be distinguished, and it needed a better instrument. This cluster contains no nebulosity. 

Ammasso di stelle vicino alle stelle n ed o di Antinoo [oggi a e d Scuti], tra le quali ve n'è una più brillante dell'altra; con un telescopio di tre piedi non si possono distinguere, e occorre uno strumento superiore. Quest'ammasso non contiene nebulosità.
