The Messier's description

Nébuleuse sans étoile, découverte dans le Renard, entre le deux pattes de devant, & très-près de l'étoile 14e de cette constellation, 5e grandeur suivant Flamstéed; on la voit bien avec une lunette ordinaire de 3 pieds & demi: elle paroît sous une forme ovale, & ne contient aucune étoile. M. Messier en a rapporté la position sur la Carte de la Comète de 1779, qui sera gravée pour le volume de l'Acad. de la même année. Revue le 31 Janvier 1781. 

Nebula without stars, discovered in Vulpecula, between the two fore-paws and very near the star 14 of that constellation, 5th magnitude following Flamsteed; it can be well seen in an ordinary telescope of three and half feet; it appears oval-shaped and contains no star. M. Messier has reported its position on the Chart of the Comet of 1779 which will be engraved for the volume of the Acad. of the same year. Recorded on chart of comet of 1779. Reviewed January 31, 1781. 

Nebulosa senza stelle scoperta in Vulpecula, tra le zampe anteriori, e vicinissima alla stella 14a di questa costellazione, 5a magnitudine secondo Flamsteed; la si vede bene con un telescopio ordinario da tre piedi e mezzo [lf]: appare di forma ovale, e non contiene stelle. M. Messier ne ha riportato la posizione sulla Carta della Cometa del 1779, che sarà incisa sul volume dell'Accad. dello stesso anno. Rivista il 31 gennaio 1781.
