The Messier's description

 Position de la belle nébuleuse de l'epée d'Orion, par l'étoile q qui y est contenue avec trois autres étoiles plus petites qu'on ne peut voir qu'avec de bons instrumens. M. Messier est entré dans de grands détails sur cette grande nébuleuse; il en a donné un dessin, fait avec le plus grand soin, qu'on peut voir dans les Mémoires de l'Académie, anée 1771, planche VIII. Ce fut Huygens qui la découvrit en 1656: elle a été observée par un grand nombre d'Astronomes. Rapportée sur l'Atlas anglois.  

 Position of the fine nebula in Orion's sword, by the star q which is included there with three other stars, smaller than can be seen even with good instruments. M. Messier has prepared a drawing in which he has included the details of this Great Nebula with the greatest care, which can be seen in the Memoirs of the Academy for 1771, pl. VIII. Huygens discovered it in 1656. It has been observed since by many astronomers. Reported in the English Atlas.  

 Posizione della bella nebulosa della spada d'Orione, dalla stella q che vi é contenuta con altre tre stelle più piccole che non si possono osservare che con buoni strumenti. M. Messier é entrato nei più piccoli dettagli su questa grande nebulosa; ne ha fornito un disegno, fatto con la massima accuratezza, che si può vedere nelle Memorie dell'Accademia, anno 1771, pl. VIII. Fu Huygens ad osservarla per primo, nel 1656: essa é stata osservata da un gran numero di astronomi. Riportata sull'Atlante inglese.
