The Messier's description

 Amas de très petites étoiles, entre la tête du grand Chien & les deux pattes de derrière de la Licorne, déterminé en comparant cet amas à la 2e étoile du Navire, 6e grandeur, suivant Flamstéed; on ne peut voir ces étoiles qu'avec une bonne lunette; l'amas contient un peu de nébulosité.  

 A cluster of very small stars, between the head of the Great Dog and the two hind feet of the Unicorn, located by comparing this cluster with the 6th-magnitude star 2 Navis (according to Flamsteed); these stars can be seen only with a good refractor; the cluster contains a little nebulosity.  

 Ammasso di piccolissime stelle, tra la testa del Cane Maggiore e le due zampe posteriori dell'Unicorno, determinato in base alla 2a stella della Nave, 6a magnitudine, secondo Flamsteed; non si possono vedere queste stelle se non con un buon telescopio; l'ammasso contiene un po' di nebulosità.
