The Messier's description:

Nébuleuse vue par M. Méchain la nuit du 29 au 30 Août 1780, au dessus du cou du Capricorne. M. Messier l'a cherchée les 4 & 5 Octobre suivant: sa lumière foible comme la précédente; près d'elle est une petite étoile télescopique: sa position déterminée par l'etoile n du Verseau, cinquième grandeur.  

Nebula seen by M. Mechain on the night of1780, August 29-30, above the neck of Capricornus. M. Messier looked for it on October 4th and 5th following: its light is as faint as the preceding. Near to it is a small telescopic star: the position was determined from the star n Aquarii, 5th mag.  

Nebulosa vista da M. Méchain la notte tra il 29 e il 30 agosto 1780, sopra il collo del Capricorno. M. Messier l'ha cercata il 4 e il 5 ottobre seguenti: la sua luce é debole come la precedente; vicino c'é una piccola stella telescopica: la sua posizione é stata determinata in base alla stella n Aquarii, 5a magnitudine.
