The Messier's description

Nébuleuse sans étoile, entre le Sagittaire & la tête du Capricorne: vue par M. Méchain le 27 & le 28 Août 1780. M. Messier l'a cherchée le 5 Octobre suivant & le 18 l'a comparée à l'étoile n° 4, sixième grandeur du Capricorne, suivant Flamstéed: il a semblé à M. Messier qu'elle n'étoit composée que de très-petites étoiles, contenant de la nébulosité: M. Méchain l'a rapportée  comme nébuleuse sans étoiles. M. Messier la vit le 5 Octobre; mais la Lune étoit sur l'horizon, & ce ne fut que le 18 du même mois qu'il put juger de ses apparences & en déterminer son lieu.

Messier looked for it on the following October 5, and on October 18 compared it with the star 4 Capricorni, 6th magnitude following Flamsteed: it seemed to M. Messier to be composed nly of very small stars containing some nebulosity. M. Méchain has reported it as a nebula without stars. M. Messier saw it on October 5 but the Moon was on the horizon, and it was not until the 18th of the same month that he was able to judge of its appearance and determine its position.

Messier l'ha cercata il 5 ottobre seguente e il 18 l'ha paragonata alla stella n° 4, sesta mag. del Capricorno, secondo Flamsteed: é sembrato a M. Messier che fosse composta da piccole stelle, contenente della nebulosità: M. Méchain l'ha riportata come nebulosa senza stelle. M. Messier la vide il 5 ottobre; ma la Luna era sopra l'orizzonte e non fu che il 18 dello stesso mese che poté giudicare del suo aspetto e determinarne la posizione.
