The Messier's description

 Nébuleuse sans étoile, près de la précédente; l'une & l'autre paroissoient en même-temps dans le champ de la lunette, celle-ci moins apparente que la précédente; sa lumière foible & alongée: à son extrémité est una étoile télescopique. Vue à Berlin, par M. Bode, le 31 Décembre 1774, & par M. Méchain au mois d'Août 1779. 

 Nebula without star, near the preceding; both appearing in the same field of the telescope. This one is less conspicuous than the preceding; the light is faint and elongated with a telescopic star at its extremity. Seen at Berlin by M. Bode on December 31, 1774, and by M. Mechain in August 1779. 

 Nebulosa senza stelle, vicina alla precedente: entrambe appaiono insieme nel campo del telescopio, questa é meno luminosa della precedente; la sua luce é debole ed elongata: alla sua estremità c'é una stella telescopica. Vista a Berlino da M. Bode, il 31 dicembre 1774, e da M. Méchain nel mese d'agosto 1779.
