The Messier's description

 Nébuleuse sans étoile, près de la tête du Centaure: elle paroissoit sous une lumière foible & égale, mais si difficile à voir avec la lunette, que la moindre lumière pour éclairer les fils du micromètre la fasoit disparoître. Ce ne sera qu'avec beaucoup d'attention qu'on pourra la voir: elle forme un triangle avec deux étoiles estimées de sixième & de septième grandeur: déterminée par les étoiles i, k, h, de la tête du Centaure: M. de la Caille avoit déja déterminé cette nébuleuse. Voyez à la fin de ce Catalogue. 

 Nebula without star near the head of Centaurus: it appears as a faint, even light but so difficult to see in the telescope that the least illumination of the micrometer wires makes it disappear: only with must concentration can it be seen at all. It forms a triangle with two stars estimated at 6th and 7th mag. Position was determined from the stars i, k and h in the head of Centaurus. M. de la Caille has already determined this nebula.  Nebulosa senza stelle, vicino alla testa del Centauro: essa appare di una luce debole e uguale, ma così difficile da vedere col telescopio, che la minima illuminazione dei fili del micrometro la fa scomparire. Soltanto con molta attenzione la si potrà vedere: essa forma un triangolo con due stelle stimate di sesta e di settima magnitudine: determinata in base alle stelle i, k, h della testa del Centauro: M. de la Caille aveva già determinato questa nebulosa.
